CAS Members,
Inspired by the survival story from CAS Co-founder, Joe Belcher, a group of CAS member breweries have developed a program to increase awareness and raise money for blood cancer research (Leukemia, Lymphoma, Myeloma). That beer and our mission carry the same name: Out for Blood!
We have a plan, we have the beer name, we have the donor structure in place – We need you to make one batch of delicious beer to help us cure cancer.
Why we're Out For Blood
"2 years ago, I took my last round of chemotherapy to battle non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I was devastated when diagnosed, but I feel lucky in the sense it was me and not my wife or one of my kids. That is difficult to write but is important for me to share. It is what motivates me still to fight, to fight for others. Today I am a survivor. Today every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer. So, brew with us, join the fight, and together, let’s go Out for Blood!" - Joe Belcher, Co-Founder Crafting A Strategy
Timeline
The beer needs to be in tanks early July 2019 to allow two months of sell through via your taprooms. Can you fit Out for Blood into your July 2019 production schedule? We will collect the donations in September 2019 for donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society October 12, 2019. Crucial dates:
-Commitment Date: June 3, 2019
-Will receive promotion packed by July 1, 2019
-Collect donation by September 16, 2019
Freedom to Brew
Our program is not the same as Resilience IPA. We know cancer is very personal and our CAS planning team of breweries wanted the freedom to make any beer they wanted to reflect their own personal connection to blood cancer. We love that idea! We love combining your brewery’s stories and personal creativity with our own story of survival. The Out For Blood name, subheading and copy will be the same at every participating brewery, but each brewery has the freedom to determine their own style and recipe. Brew a beer that compliments your tap list and inspires us all to go Out For Blood!
Here are additional specifics if interested and there will be more to come:
Progress – Brand
We have finalized all branding efforts and collateral items that will be shipped to each participating brewery. Package will include stickers, coasters and a 11x17 poster. Our public webpage with program details, participating breweries and sponsors is live: OutForBlood.Beer
Progress – Legal
Trademark will be owned by CAS and licensed to breweries for free. Donations from breweries will be made to CAS and one donation will be made from CAS to LLS (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society). For this round, since trademark is running in parallel with beer making, we ask you to make one batch and sell it in your taproom. Keep it simple. Trademark filing occurred in May 2019. Hopefully, the mark gets successfully registered to us so we can do this for years to come.
Progress - % of Profits
Our planning team of brewery owners has discussed a recommended donation of 50% gross profit if the beer is sold direct to consumers in your own taproom. We need you to make the beer, cover your costs, make some money for yourselves, and then give a donation to help beat cancer - in that order. If you sell the beer through self-distribution or wholesale (which we think is awesome - more awareness), we ask for a commensurate percentage donation based upon the price you are able to get (assuming same COGS).
Progress - Tax Deduction
We are currently working with tax professionals to ensure your donation is tax deductible. With CAS acting as the collector of donations, we will provide transmittal letters, tracking information, and facilitate acknowledgement from LLS (a 501c3 non profit) for your tax deductible donation. We will send the specific transmittal language and procedures to all participating breweries prior to the beer going into the tanks.
